Kizomba Classes in London: A Complete Beginner’s Guide (what to expect, levels, how to start)
Thinking about learning Kizomba in London but not sure where to start? You’re in the right place. Whether you’ve never danced before or you’re coming from salsa or bachata, this guide covers everything you need to know before your first class: what Kizomba is, what a class looks like, what to wear, and how to go from nervous beginner to enjoying the social dance floor.
I’m Miss Ginga Boo (Sonny) and I’ve been teaching Kizomba in London since 2017. Now Every week I see complete beginners walk in nervous, stressed and by end of the classes and leaving smiling, relax and very happy with the experience.
▪️What is Kizomba?
Kizomba is a smooth, connected partner dance that comes from all Portuguese African speaking countries Angola (PALOP). It’s danced to slow, rhythmic music and is known for its close embrace, its walking-based steps and the strong connection between partners.
Unlike some partner dances, Kizomba isn’t about fast spins or complicated tricks. It’s about **connection, musicality and enjoying the music together**. That’s exactly why it’s such a welcoming dance for beginners. If you can walk, you can learn Kizomba.
You may also hear about **Semba**, Kizomba’s older and more playful from Angolan “parent” dance, and **Urban Kiz**, from France a modern style with more footwork and dramatic musical interpretation. Most people start with Kizomba foundations and explore the other styles later.
▪️ Do I need any dance experience?
No. Most of our students start with no dance experience at all. A good beginners class is built step by step: first walking to the music, then the basic steps, then how to lead and follow. You’ll be surprised how quickly it comes together.
If you’ve danced salsa, bachata or ballroom before, that will help with confidence and rhythm, but Kizomba has its own feel. Even experienced dancers start at the foundations.
▪️Do I need a partner?
No, and most people come on their own. In our classes we **rotate partners**, so everyone gets to practise with different people. It’s one of the best ways to learn, because every partner feels a little different, and it’s also how many of our students have made new friends in London.
▪️What happens in a beginners Kizomba class?
Here’s what a typical Thursday evening looks like at Ginga Boo:
– **7:00pm – Practice and socialising.** Arrive, meet people and warm up.
– **7:30pm and 8:45pm – Two classes.** Each one is about an hour, across 4 levels, so you’ll always be in the right group.
– **9:45pm – Social dancing.** The lights go down, the music comes up, and everyone dances freely.
In a **Level 1 Foundations** class, you’ll typically learn:
– Posture and the Kizomba embrace (and how to keep it comfortable)
– Walking and grounding with the music
– The basic steps and simple variations
– How to lead and how to follow
After each event we like to share the Dance floor etiquette so that the students feel more comfortable & confident entering their dance journey.
All our students come back every thanking us for given tips on those area.
▪️Our levels: how you’ll progress
At Ginga Boo we teach 4 levels, so you can keep growing:
– **Level 1 – Foundations:** strong basics, connection, lead & follow and etiquette
– **Level 1B – Bootcamp:** drilling your foundations until they feel natural
– **Level 2 – Progress & Flow:** technique, variations, patterns and musicality
– **Level 3 – Mastery:** advanced steps, footwork, personal style and musicality
Not sure which level is right for you? Just ask our teachers on the night. They’ll will let you know which level are you 🙂
▪️What should I wear to my first class?
Keep it simple and comfortable:
– **Clothes:** anything you can move in easily, like leggings, jeans, trousers or a skirt
– **Shoes:** smooth soles that let you turn easily. Avoid trainers with heavy grip, as they stick to the floor.
– **Heels:** completely optional. Many beginners start in flat shoes.
▪️Will I have to dance close to strangers?
Kizomba is danced in a close embrace, but **your comfort always comes first**. You choose how close you dance, you can adjust the hold at any time, and it’s always fine to politely say no to a dance. Good teachers explain etiquette from the very first class, and the Kizomba community is known for being respectful and friendly.
▪️How long does it take to learn Kizomba?
Everyone learns at their own pace, but with regular weekly classes, most beginners feel comfortable with the basic steps **within a few weeks**, and confident enough to enjoy the social dance floor **within a few months**.
Two things speed it up more than anything else:
1. **Coming every week.** Consistency beats intensity.
2. **Staying for the social dancing,** even for 30/45 minutes. That’s where everything you learn in class comes together.
3. **Attend practise session
4. **Practise at home

Overall, the experience was really positive. I especially liked the structure of the lesson, which made it easy to follow and build on the movements step-by-step.
